The biggest Bay Area construction projects cost more than the GDP of 80 countries

The Bay Area’s largest construction projects cost $22 billion collectively, which is more than the gross domestic product of Cyprus. Per the International Monetary Fund, 79 other countries also have a GDP smaller than this region’s $22 billion construction tab.

That’s partially due to the scale of the projects and sky-high costs. Those costs have helped contribute to the Bay area being a poster child for California’s housing crisis.
